My scanner is the Epson Perfection 4490 Photo (Awesome scanner by the way) and I use PhotoImpression for my adjustments. Below are some before and after scans:

Adjusted to an Intensity of 50 and changing the Shadow from 50 to 45

My scanner makes pretty good scans the way it is, I just tweek the Intensity and Shadow to fine tune it.
