A theory

That chip, to me, looks like it has seen a lot of use, and shows noticeable wear. If the lighter color is caused by the wear over time through extensive use, the indentation areas would not be subjected to the same levels of friction caused by handling, sliding on the felt or rubbing against other chips (or other objects, if stored in a drawer, box, etc.).

Just a thought.
