I know there have been fake silver dollars from the mid 1800's floating around the flea markets for years. They are normally lighter than the real thing and just don't sound right when dropped. I saw fake pieces of eight in Central America when I went on a cruise a few years ago. I almost bought one but then looked again and it just didn't look right. I knew it was fake when two other dealers in the flea market had the EXACT same one.
