Just a thought about the "fading" on half. It kinda reminds me of when my house burned down a few years back. We would find stuff that wasn't burned, but it would have smoke damage over the part that was exposed and the part that was hidden (like having two books stacked, but not squared) would be perfectly clean, like nothing had happened.

Just thought maybe that was a possibility also.
