All live chips in NV must have some form of 'unique' makers mark. Probably true in some other jurisdictions also. Some manufacturers just use a mark on every chip made to keep it simple.
Now this is the interesting thing. Since I've been involved in chip manufacture I've had to deal with some re-orders for dye-sub chips which naturally you want to have made by the same manufacturer as before (assuming they are still in business).
I'm not going to list names or relationships but I can tell you there are at least 9 facilities in the US making dye-sub chips, some make chips for each other or supply blanks for each other, or buy their blanks from overseas or even have some of their chips made overseas.
There are companies that no-one here will have ever heard of that do not 'retail' which make dye-sub chips for others that purport to make them themselves, and I have samples that I would swear were not made by the company whose supposed makers mark's appear.
Even though the security is now possible, there is good reason why only smaller casinos (or those close to bankruptcy) order these chips.
