This reminds me

of the license plate collectors that were scratching their heads trying to figure out a small metal license plate that had three small initials and 4 or 5 digits. They later found out MUCH later it was a marker from a utility pole. They couldn't conceive of metal plates being anything other than license plates.

If a suspected item is not quickly identified as a gaming piece on this website, then I believe those who thought outside the box and answered "coat check" are probably right. In fact, I think an internet search of coat checks or restaurant supplies might confirm their theories, and further confirm that plastic checks are common.
