How does this site find my IP address?

I know Greg set up something to show each poster's IP address in the post. This was a number of years ago. Now that IPv6 (internet protocol, version 6) is becoming more widespread, it's possible that the earlier IPv4 IP addresses xx.xx.xx.xx may not reflect the actual id of the poster. IPv6 is called new, but it's actually been around for 6 years or so in the USA. Not all Internet Providers support it yet. Comcast does now in my area.

My posts show my IP address as 24.21.109.28

My IP address for IPv6 is 2601:7:1980:a16:5852:a28:8679:c609

Note the different display format. The number of addresses in the new version is much much larger than was possible with IPv4.

The only IP address that an external (to my network) site can see is that of my Linksys router. I have it setup to use IPv6 when possible. Can you tell up David how TheChipBoard gets the IP address it displays in posts?

If anyone want to understand more of the networking details of Internet Protocol addressing, see, Google "find ip address" from your computer. This will show your IPv6 IP address if you have one. Click on "learn more" in the first search result to read more about Internet Protocol.

If you want to know more about IP, see this Wikipedia URL for more than your probably want to know grin :
