I posted this about a year ago but thought I would repost. I am still stunned by what happened and with some negativity floating around, I thought I would try to shine a light on the other side of the hobby...
I have been pretty vocal about prior interactions with club members that I felt were less than pleasant. So I felt it necessary to post a conversation and "trade" with a long-time club member that was in a word....amazing. Here is the story, sorry for the length.
A couple of weeks ago, some of you may have seen a post whereby I bought a bunch of "crap" off ebay. The crap contained some chips, pocket knives, necklaces, pins, etc. I was making fun of myself for having "a problem". Anyway... I was contacted by a club member asking about the necklaces. He said that he may be interested in them for his granddaughter. Since the package was bought for the chips, any use anyone could get out of the other "junk", feel free right? After receiving the package, I sent him a scan of the necklaces and we emailed back and forth about what substances the necklaces were made of. I am certainly no expert in the area so I told him that I would ship the necklaces to him so that he can inspect them. If they were junk (which I suspected), he can keep them, throw them away, give them to his granddaughter....whatever. I would want nothing in return. If in fact, they did hold value, he could send me a chip or two. I told him that I collected anything Frontier but would accept anything he had (Frontier or not)....just whatever he thought was fair. He agreed and I shipped the necklaces to him.
After a few days, he sent me an email stating that he had received the necklaces but they were not made of the materials he had hoped for. According to him, they still were worth $25-$30 and his granddaughter would love them. He also sent a scan of some Frontier chips and asked if I needed them. Of the 4 chips he scanned, I needed two of them. Not only did I need them......but they are both on my 'MOST WANTED" list. He asked for me to provide my phone number so we could discuss. Needless to say, I forwarded my phone number IMMEDIATELY. We talked for about 15 minutes about chipping as well as other topics of interest. In the end, he asked me if any of the Frontier chips were of interest. I specified the two I was interested in and told him....as he already knew, that those chips were worth MUCH more than $25-$30 and I would certainly be willing to buy the chips from him. He wouldn't hear of it. He said that the chips are going to be sent to me and he did not want any money in return. WHAT? He said that he had been collecting for a lot of years and enjoyed them. He wanted someone else to enjoy them now. Needless to say I was shocked! I thanked him 4 or 5 times and we hung up. After sitting stunned for a while, I send him an email and thanked him again.
I am purposely not mentioning his name as I don’t know if would want that. From my conversation with him, I don't suspect that he needs or would want to make a public thing out of his generosity.
Without further ado.... here are the newest additions to my Frontier collection.
