I don't know how these got listed in the first place (in 2003)... they shouldn't be. They seem to be arbitrarily listed under the Lake Tahoe property, even though no location is listed on the chip. We will likely remove them from the book.
The chips were, indeed, ordered as movie props. In fact, looking at the manufacturer's order card, they were delivered in 1981 to the exact address where I am at this very minute (formerly MGM Studios, currently Sony Studios).
A side note: I started to try to figure out for which film these were made, searching through MGM and United Artists films that were released in 1982 (I thought maybe it was DINER), but realized that just because the production office was based here, or the film was shot on the studio lot, doesn't necessarily mean that it was an MGM or UA film. Lots of non-Sony films are shot here, as we have some of the biggest sound stages in the world on the lot. On the soundstage right next to my office building, for example, they had been shooting Christopher Nolan's INTERSTELLAR (coming in November from Paramount) for probably half a year. When they were done, they tore down the sets, put in some stadium seating, and filmed the finale for THE BIGGEST LOSER several weeks ago. Lots of BIG musicians also like that soundstage to have pre-tour rehearsals on their full concert stages.
