In my opinion it was a term formed by modern-day, English-speaking chip collectors after we became well-organized.

The 2.50 denomination chips have been used in casinos for over 100-years and I've never found a term for them, anywhere... even in manufacturers' catalogs or in any of the older gambling guides...
