I picked up two pearl chips on ebay a while back. They have an interesting monogram with a delicate crown in the center of crossed letter (I’s). I had not seen them before so I thought they were worth a go. On the back is the word “Serrant”, a quick google search for “Serrant”, brings up numerous photos and information on “Chateau de Serrant”, a grand 14th century medieval fortress located in the Loire Valley west of Angers France. While reviewing the history of the Chateau I looked for owners of the castle during the second half of the 19th century that would lead me back to the crossed (I’s) and the crown crest.

Nothing with (I’s) but there is a family named “Tremoille” that lived in the Chateau around this time period. The cover of the Tremoille Family History will answers the question of the monogram. The crossed (I’s) are really 4 (T’s) facing different directions.
Back to Trimoli & Serrant.
The château eventually passes out of the hands of the Walsh family in 1830 when Valentine Walsh de Serrant marries the
Duc de La Trémoïlle.

I surmise that this set of chips would have been ordered by the family at the time the two families joined or possibly ordered as a gift for the union.
Engraved mother of pearl chips like these were likely made by the Parisian gaming supply company called G. Caro Fabricant, they made the highest quality gaming supplies through the 1800’s into the 1900’s.
The Chateau is now a museum. I contacted the current director who said that they do not have a Mother of Pearl game set in their collection. I’m sure there were larger pieces in this set when it was made, anyone seen any?
