Any help on id is greatly appreciated. I got these all a few weekends ago at an antique dealer. I asked in a multi-dealer store about casino chips and, much to my surprise, they said one of the dealers might have some. The very same guy walked in the door about a minute later. He said yeah, got stuff out of his trunk and voila:
I know the "R" chip is from the River, which then became Fish Street, then the Country Club, then back to the River, then who knows? I spoke with the cage at Fish Street long ago and they told me they had tournament chips which were cheap plastic chips with stickers on them and this one fits the description, but I have no way to verify if this is actually one of them. I know of the Long Island Players Club, but only have the $1 chip. The others are a mystery.
The GS chips came in a set. They could be a home set or otherwise. The white-ish chips are pretty dirty, but the red and black are clean and all are in great shape. What appears to be dirt on the white chip are greenish flecks that are part of the chip itself. Here is a picture of the set with a white chip that has been cleaned (the only chip I have cleaned in the whole set):
According to Robert Eisenstadt, the elephant head and crown mold is made by Marion Co. and has been used since the 1980's. It has been used in casinos outside of the US (such as the Casino Royale in St. Maarten) and for private use. I would suppose they could have been used at an underground card club. In any case, I have many extras and would sell them for $5 each plus $2.25 for s&h, or $14 for all three, shipped. If you are interested, please send me an e-mail. Please note that paypal is greatly preferred!
I do not have any extras of any of the others.
In any case, I was pretty excited, because in my experience, it is VERY hard to come across chips of any sort at antique dealers on Long Island. So, I'm happy to add these to my collection.
