What I do not know is how the system accounts for this statisically, i.e., does the previous contributor's total decrease by the number of new scans and the new contributor's total then increase a like value?

However, the 'contributor' change is a manual action that the Admin must make. If the Admin does not make the change, then the past contributor's name will remain.
