In my early Air Force days, when firing on a "bulls eye's target," after shooting a 5-clip round from an M1 Garand rifle, the range sergeant would telephone the real "pit boss" for confirmation. Target pullers used round black circle disks to mark each hit. If the target pullers could not find any holes in the target, they waved a 8X8 white flag on a bamboo stick over the target area meaning, "Maggie's Drawers." Later, yearly qualifying rounds at the range were with 30-cal. carbines and 50-shots were fired at a silhouette target. If 45 out 50 bullets hit the target, the shooter received a sharp's shooter medal. When the M16 came along, 100 rounds, at 100 yards (greatly improved weapon), the hit ratio was upped to a higher standard, and only a ribbon was awarded for expert marksmanship. Attention!, "Ready Right, Ready Left, Ready on The Firing Line!" "Commence Fire," was the cry.
Have a nice day!
