eBay New old Crest & Seal find: Order of Owls

Take a look at my eBay auction. Nice chip and story. A hoot! Chip was rare and only known in red. Just now some blues popped up and not many in good condition, like this one. Look: http://www.ebay.com/itm/151095398598

ORDER OF OWLS: The Order of Owls (OOO) is an American Fraternal order which was founded in 1904 by John W. Talbot in South Bend, Indiana. In 1907 its emblem (seen on the poker chip) was adopted. Like other fraternal organizations its goals were "to assist its members in business and in employment, provide help to the widows and orphans of the deceased members, and to enjoy mutual fellowship and recreation with one another." It was replete with secret passwords, grips and rituals. It was open to all religions ( "We advocate no creed. We know there are so many gods, so many creeds, so many paths that wind and wind. We believe that the art of being kind is all this world needs."), but originally only to white males.

Membership peaked at 600,000 in 2,148 chapters (called "Nests") in the 1920s. Talbot went to prison at Leavenworth for five years on a "morals charge" relating to a young woman who worked in one of the group's hospitals in 1921. By 1951 there were approximately 100,000 members and 1,500 Nests, 40,000 members in 1979 and 5,000 in 1989. The most recently organized "nest" in Baltimore, Maryland was raided in 2005 as an "illegal poker den with political, criminal, and law enforcement ties". Nowadays the order has Nests in five US states: New York, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana.

Bruce Dern playing poker with robots in sci fi "Silent Running" (1972).

"The loner crew member of a spaceship harbouring Earth's last nature reserves goes renegade when he is instructed to jettison his beloved forests and return home. Accompanied only by three robots, he ponders the fate of his last pocket of nature and the murders of his fellow crew members in this far-looking speculative film. ... [He] and the two remaining robots chart a course into deep space, far away from the fleet. Alone except for his accompanying drones, Lowell befriends them and renames them Huey, Dewey and (posthumously) Louie. He teaches them to play poker, plant trees, and bury the killed crewmember. ...," per IMDb.
