I grew up in the San Diego area, and downtown one of the bigger older skyscrapers at that time was the El Cortez hotel with the glass elevator on the outside of the building! It scared the crap out of me going up it, but it was very exciting!

They used to have a nice restaurant up on the top floor with a nice overlook of the city.
