The hat always comes off last and goes into the plastic tray on top of the belt, shoes, etc. Several trips ago, the hat was knocked off while going through the x-ray machine.

I missed it until I got to the gate. Went back to security and lucky for me it had popped out of the x-ray machine and was put into the Lost and Found. While the hat is no big deal, I am very partial to a tie-tack attached to it that was a gift from my wife.
