~~~ Italy, Spain and Algeria; and never considered it a problem having seen sights I surely would have missed, otherwise.
Once took a taxi from the train station in Napoli and the driver asked if I would like to see the panorama da Villanova (Bay of Naples from atop a hill) for a few hundred LIT extra...
...and I enjoyed it so much since it was something I would have never, ever seen -- let alone knowing how to get up the hill... that I gave him what he asked for and two packs of cigs...
Another (considered a rip-off by some): My wife and I purchased a postal bus passage in Brig over the Simplon Pass down to the first train station in Italy, and we were asked if we wanted the 'local' or 'express' route. For a few extra Swiss franc we boarded the (local) slowest bus trip of our life; not missing one town en route over the Alps and hitting every cluster postal drop-off center and seeing sights that would have cost 100X by any other mode of travel... and the best part about the bus (mail deliverey bus) trip is that you can get off at any location going south and either transfer on to the next bus going south or simply get on the same bus as it returns north -- and interchange anywhere between... Having a schedule helped and for a few extra bucks we spent the whole day in the Alps going from one town to another where some stops were up to 20-minutes.
