...when I posted that note that "boiling chip" sounds like our kind of chips....boiling chips are used when you are heating a low boiling point solvent....it helps to distribute the heat evenly so that "bumping" doesn't occur. So now you probably want to know what "bumping" is...
Bumping is small little explosions that can throw your solvent out of its container....it looks like it only "boils" every so often....your solvent will look like it's not boiling then, all of a sudden, is will boil violently. The chips help to keep it boiling at a constant rate. They're just small pieces of metal or glass.

Nothing to do with casino chips....but they are referred to as chips.
