I am not normally the one saying that it sat in the sun but i saw a similar effect when i put a chip in a jar with a bunch of matchbooks. I had an old candy jar and would toss things in there. A few weeks later i was walking by and saw the results. It wasn't a controlled test but interesting none the less.

I am not saying that is what you have but its something like that.
