One side benefit of getting the new number is you can pick the areacode you want it in. Most would want it in the area covered by their residence, but you may want it to look like you live elsewhere. If you want a local Las Vegas phone number, just ask for an A/C 702 number; want to live in Beverly Hills, ask for an A/C 424 number!

I've never bothered to try my box elsewhere but supposedly, you can plug it in wherever there is wired internet and take your phone calls there (in a hotel?) You'd have to take a handset with you as well.

By the way, I plug in a wireless (not cell) phone to my Ooma box at home and have phones in several rooms. Works fine, even the Caller ID works on all the phones. My internet service comes from Comcast, by the way. They frequently try to sell me their add-on IP phone service; I don't bother to tell me I already have it, free .

You also get free voice mail that can be accessed from your computer, wherever you are. That's why I don't bother to take my box and phone... I can check voicemail on my laptop and listen to the messages on the computer speaker. If I want to answer one, I use my cellphone as most providers have flat-rate domestic phone calls these days.
