Die is same for casino issue and collector set $'s
In Response To: Token info ()

The dollar tokens in collector sets are made from the same die, but are either early strikes or are true proofs (polished dies and double struck).

In a few cases, the metal used for some of the collector tokens is different from that used for casino-run tokens (like silver, or in one case, platinum). Also, one set had plain edged tokens while all the casino-run tokens have reeded edges. For the year 1967, FM sets had silver $5 tokens that were marked STERLING while the casino run $5's were not silver and the die didn't have the STERLING mark.

If you like to have UNC tokens for your collection, there's no reason not to get them from FM collector sets as all will be UNC and mostly handled so there are NO bag marks. Collector sets were only sold for five years, 1965 through 1969, but there are individual proof tokens made for some other years, mainly for casino execs and presentation purposes. For these later years, proofs are sometimes found from mints other than Franklin Mint, and are generally quite hard to find.

One exception to the above is the error token made for Harold Club in Reno. The collector set said Harolds Club, Las Vegas . FM offered to replace collector coins that were errors, but most collectors chose to keep the errors. You can find both types of the $5 tokens in collections.

After 1969, the US Mint made available Ike dollars and private casino slot-token minting was not allowed for the next nine years. This changed again in 1979 which started the second period of issue for Nevada gaming tokens. I don't think FM made any Nevada slot tokens after 1984; at least that's the latest year I've found for my FM token collection.

Dan's web site is a good source of what's available for tokens, with some value information as well.

C.T. Rodgers authored a book that describes the FM collector sets that were made. There are also FM issued guides and some private guides to FM tokens that give additional information on the gaming tokens made by Franklin Mint.
