He told me that the guy is spending 3 (I believe he said 3) years in Canada in order to aquire citizenship.

I also said spending 3 (or maybe 4) years in a country just to save a little time at the border didn't make much sense.

However, if this is true (and I see no reason why my friend woud lie. In fact I know he wasn't lying) can you not see why this disturbs me?
