I also agree that learning how to properly handle and shoot weapons is VERY necessary. As a former Police Officer, I have taught many friends, my own children and my oldest Grandson how to safely handle and use handguns and rifles. In California, you must demonstrate a knowledge of use and safetly issues with weapons before you may legally purchase same.
I believe there are many issues to be addressed in the wake of this horrible tragedy, not just gun control. Mental health services, most of which have been cut way back by states due to budget constraints, for example, need to be addressed in terms of treatment of individuals with serious mental disorders. Many severely psychotic individuals wander our streets with no resources and a lack of care. If their "belief" is that they are being attacked, wronged or harmed, they may act in ways which make no sense to us but become a tragedy.
