The first ten amendments to Constitution, collectively known as the Bill of Rights, all address individual’s rights for protection from the government. The second amendment is no different. During our founding fathers time, the militia was considered to be all able bodied males between ages 17 & 55 (or something close to that), except for certain government officials. If you read the writings from that time you will learn that the right to have firearms is an individual right.

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

The first part of the second amendment explains that a militia is necessary. The second part states the RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

To me it is pretty simple to understand that this is the right of the people.
