Has anyone here tried to get an evenly lit photo of a Mother of Pearl chip? They are really tough. The very nature of the material seems to catch light from different directions and reflects it back so you have to tip the chip around in your hand to see it all (top photo). Below is an experiment shooting the chip out doors in bright sunlight. It kills the reflective look of the chip but, it lets you get an evenly lit surface. The thing is the image seems reversed from what you see when the chip is normally reflecting light back. The light parts are dark and the dark is light. I tried this trick. I took the image in Photoshop and just inversed it. I flopped the light and dark values. Now it's back to the way you usually see the chip. A little extra sweetening with contrast and color and I got a very evenly lit view of the chip.........I know, I know I have too much time on my hands.
