I live in Rockville Centre, NY about 8 miles from the ocean on Long Island. We lost power during the storm from a tree that fell on a power line at the corner. We have no power, heat (at night it has been around 40 degrees), hot water, phone and cell phone service. We relocated to my mother's house in Forest Hills, NY (Queens) until we get power back. Currently the biggest problem facing those who are stabilized is gasoline. Most gas stations are closed because they don't have power. The ones that are open either have no gas or there are lines to get gas that are at least an hour long. This goes for all of Long Island, New York City and Westchester. Be thankful for what you have.
Everyone near the coast was effected by the storm surge. Everyone on Long Island was effected by the wind. I took pictures the day after the storm of Rockville Centre, Oceanside, Island Park and Long Beach. Oceanside and Island Park are on the bay. Long Beach is a barrier island on the ocean. You will not believe what you see. A huge tree fell on my next door neighbor's house. It looks like the house is totaled.
