Eye of the storm - update !!!

Shown below are pictures from my home of the effects of Sandy. You can see how the water rose over the road and came into the front yard from the Bay. Overall we were very, very lucky with only minor damage to the pier and a lot of debris to clean up in the yard. There is still about 3' of water on the road in back of our home. We probably won't be able to get out of the yard until Thursday or Friday when the water drains out.

At the height of the storm for us - high tide at around 11:00 am Monday morning the water surge from the river was about 18" from coming into the lower part of the house which is only about 40' from the water.

This was probably the 3rd or 4th highest tide surge we have experienced in the 67 years I have lived here on the Indian River Bay in Southern Delaware.

As you can see we had the row boat on a new deck on the side of the house available for escape if things got really bad - fortunately we didn't need to use it.

The March 1962 Storm is still the worse I have ever experienced when we had to be rescued from the roof of the old house which was flooded by 42" of water.

New Jersey and New York really got hammered by Sandy. We are very luck that the storm hit North of us by only about 50 or 60 miles and increased in forward speed as it neared the coast to help minimize the damage here.

Take care,
Jerry "Very grateful Sandy left us intact" Birl
