Scanning Casino Chips 101

Scanning Elongated Coins

Elongated coins are flattened using extremely high pressure and generates a lot of heat. During this process the heat bends the coin causing the coin to curve as it cools. I picked a well curved elongated coin for this scanning test.
There are two types of scanners.
A CIS type scanner will focus only on the portion that is in contact with the scanner glass. If the coin is curved the raised portion will be out of focus.
A CCD type scanner will focus on an object even if its not in contact with the scanner glass.
The coin on the left was scanned using a CIS type scanner while the coin on the right was scanned with a CCD type scanner. The picture below shows the curve in the coin. Only the top and bottom portion of the CIS scan are in focus because these are the points that are in contact with the scanner glass. The entire CCD scan is in focus.
