Has this always been common practice or did it come about at a certain time? I'm thinking of the Nice jetons I have. In the first series from 1929, there are two ovals, a 500 and a 100.000, but there are denoms between them, including a round 1.000 and a square 10.000. Is it likely the ovals represented markers?
