I was living in the Detroit area when the 9/11 attacks occurred. In the aftermath of that incident, people everywhere flew the American flag - from their porches, taped to bicycle handles, and attached to their cars.

A couple weeks later, I was teaching a seminar in Ann Arbor, home of the University of Michigan. I was struck by the lack of flags flying in that college town, and I asked about it.

I was told that flying the flag was considered a form of "hate speech" because it made foreigners feel uncomfortable.

May we never reach that state with the rest of our nation. My in-laws immigrated from Greece in the 1950s and, while they certainly loved their old country and their old ways, they moved here for a distinct reason. The same is true today. Some people just aren't wise enough to know it. So much for your fancy university degrees.
