My gut tells me he had Kings full of eights because of that comment about wanting to respect the guy who folded.
He didn't want to embarrass him, otherwise he'd most likely jump at the chamce to not only show what a great hand he had, but also to show what a great lay-down his fellow player made.
Nothing else makes sense to me.
