Hi John B. and John Z. Thanks to both of you for your candid comments. Both of your observations are legitimate ones which I value and respect. When I first thought about compiling a Puerto Rico reference, I originally considered just publishing a listing of molds, colors and denominations, with no illustrations that I could offer for less than $10 as sort of a check-off type book. However, the deeper I got into putting all the information together, the more I realized that the listings had to be illustrated for it to have any value among collectors of this subject matter. After several preliminary layouts and revsions it became apparent that color illustrations were going to drive up the cost substantially. In order to cut down on the cost of several hundred color illustrations it would become necessary to reduce the size of the illustrations. Ive done that and the book is still approaching 100 pages. After waiting for several people who promised to send me copies of chips they had in dealer inventory, or collectors albums, the time has come to publish with or without their information. As John B. has mentioned, there are relatively few collectors of Puerto Rico chips compared to other popular gaming juristictions. For that reason there is little interest on the collector's part to purchase such a reference. For the same reasons, there is also little profit in such an undertaking considering all the time, expense and relatively few potential purchasers involved. I doubt if 100 copies of this anticipated book will be produced. A few well known people have flat out refused to cooperate in this venture for what I consider purely selfish reasons. As for the price guide, which is what is presently holding up production, John Z. says he doesn't want to pay $25 for a $3 chip. No one wants to pay more than what any chip is worth. However, there are very few $3 chips from Puerto Rico and as far as a price guide goes.... there are no price guides presently on the market on any subject that are absolute, cast in stone, hard prices. All of them are exactly what they say they are...... guides. How many times have we seen a chip auctioned off for several times it's price guide value? Conversely, how many times have we seen chips sell at auction for substantially less than its price guide estimate? I'm experimenting with a letter code, similar to Chip Rack, to assign a range of value rather than a specific price on a specific chip. I'm still seeking out someone with a little background knowledge of PR chips to assist me in determining values and to establish a reasonable attempt at pricing. If that fails, I guess the book will be published sans price guides. At least the collector will have some better understanding of what PR chips are "out there." Presently, we have nothing. It's a beginning.
