I bought a gun safe for about $1,500. It is large enough to store my collection and important documents. Most important, it is rated for 1500 degrees F. In fires, ceiling temperatures reach 1,300 degrees F and floors at 800 dgrees. A cellar is the lowest part of a house and temps will not get to those extremes. If your fire department can reach you within 5 minutes, even ceiling temps will not get much over 1,000. And if you have a home sprinkler system, worth every penny of the $3-$4000 it costs not only will your chips be safe, but also your family. I've never tested my safe under fire conditions and hope I'll never have to.
