I don't have any fascinating stories - just a little geography lesson. Elizabeth is on the outer fringe of downtown Detroit, just north of Grand Circus Park. Woodward Avenue splits through downtown (and through the park) and heads north. It is the dividing line in Detroit for the "east side" (which has been scientifically proven to be superior) and the "west side."
21 West Elizabeth is in the first block west of Woodward.
I went to school from 1979-1982 in the second block east of Woodward (Detroit College of Law - don't look for it now; it's part of right field at Comerica Park). Being a law school neighborhood did not mean the area was devoted to observing the law. There was a house of ill-repute directly across from the law school's parking lot.
There are still clubs, etc. in the area. The area also houses the Fox Theatre, Hockeytown Cafe, and the offices of the Ilitch companies (the family owns the Detroit Tigers, the Red Wings, Hockeytown Cafe, and the Little Caesar's Pizza chain).
By the way - sometimes you find chips from a location on Gratiot Avenue. Assuming the club was actually located at 24845 Gratiot (as printed on the chips), whatever once existed there has been torn down and it has been an Olive Garden restaurant for quite a few years. It's northeast of Detroit in Eastpointe (Ed Hertel credits it to Detroit, but it has always been a suburb - back when those chips were made the suburb was called East Detroit).
