NCR BankNote of the Day- For the "Limeys"

Today’s note is a British Military note. Since it is a rather plain note and coming up with a story to go with it was difficult, but the important points about this note are it is English, and from the Royal Navy. How is it tied to the subject line you ask. It connects the note to why the term ‘Limey’ is used for the British people.

In the mid 1700’s, James Lind, a Scottish physician with the Royal Navy began doing clinical trials using limes to prevent scurvy. Men aboard ships went long durations without fruit and contracted scurvy. To combat this James Lind had fresh limes loaded aboard ships of the Royal Navy and a dramatic decrease in scurvy ensued. From this the Royal Navy sailors and later the English people were referred to in a derogatory way as ‘Limeys.’

While this is has later become a derogatory term, it is really a compliment to James Lind and the English for coming up with a cure/prevention of scurvy for its sailors. ENJOY!!!

NOTE: I hope no one is offended by the term Limey, and I see it as a reminder and compliment of James Lind’s work for the betterment of all sailors worldwide rather than a derogatory term.
