I spent many days in this Horse Race book in the 60's The casinos didn't have racebooks then. This was a true book, not in the track pair mutels, so Sammy would win or loose. No telephone bets allowed, only in house bets, he had boards on wall showing major tracks. He would get results over the ticker tape, someone would call the race off the wire, not real accurate, except the finish. He would take future bets on the Kentucky Derby. My best friend, now deceased, almost put Sammy out of business. He made a lot of small bets on a horse from England, who the book thought was a non runner, but Gary heard from a English trainer, at Santa Anita, that the horse was running, and worked a couple of terrific work outs ,not in the form. Anyway, the horse was 500 to 1 in the future book, went off at the track about 15 to 1. If he won Gary would cashed over 25,000.00. The horse went wire to wire, except lost by a nose in the last jump. Sammy, told Gary if the horse won, he would have been out of bussiness. This was in the 60's a lot of $ then, I can't remember the exact year, or horses name. Gary went to school at NLV, but played the horses every day. He noticed a mob type guy, go outside of the Race Book, make a telephone call, come back in and make a bet, he cashed a lot. So Gayr would watch this guy and follow to the window, listen for the track and horse #, then go to another window and bet the same, did pretty good. They hand wrote the ticket and time stamped, like Caliente in TJ did, I still have some old tickets. Fun old day's. Only 3 race books then, one downtown (can't remember the name), (not Santa Anita book & bar it closed in the 50's) also, the Churchil Downs race book on the strip.
