Up to 15-20 years ago, tax was payable on UK gambling wins, albeit only 10%.
The government changed strategy and instead levied an additional tax on the profits of casinos, tracks, betting shops etc.

The problem is that the online outfits are all registered in taxfree off-shore countries, so no-one can even apply that strategy.
