Insert Variations 
This is an update to a post I made back in December 2008 about insert variations. I got a lot of positive feedback on it and thought I'd provide an update.
What is an insert variation? An insert variation occurs on chips with different inlays and asymmetrical inserts. These are rare because many chips have the same inlay, or stamp, on both sides. Of those that do have different inlays their inserts, if they have any at all, are usually symmetrical. Finding a chip with both asymmetrical inserts and different inlays on both sides is rare -- less than 1%. Most of these chips tend to be older hot stamped chips with the casino name on one side and the denomination on the other. Of the 3,182 $1 chips in my collection I have only 11 insert variation pairs.
Shown below are the insert variations I have in my collection followed by a list of possible/probable insert variations I do not have. I’ve looked for some of these probable insert variations for years and still have not run across them, so I doubt they exist, but you never know. I’ve seen some of the others, like the $1 River Card Room and $1 Harrah’s Las Vegas, but don’t have them in my collection yet.
At the very bottom I’ve posted a few examples that may be considered insert variations, but simply do not adhere to the definition above. These include chips where the inserts vary “on purpose” or “by error”, insert placement variations, and Chipco edge oddities.
