The filter probably won't do much for leaves unless you get a skimmer like they have in a pool. Do you have pebbles in the bottom of your pond? The leaves do decompose and the filter will help remove the sludge. And I think one is just about necessary if you have fish (not sure why). I think they also reduce the algae bloom since the bacteria eat a lot of the uneaten food, etc.
