So first, the deal, then, the story.
I have “several” of these yellow and white sqincr Hot-stamped “D&W” chips from Harvey’s Tavern (Boring, OR), circa 1959 (same HS both sides). I’d love to trade some of these for other “like” chips. What do I mean by that? Well…
• Chips from other “illegal” card rooms/casinos, preferably in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Idaho, Washington, then California or Nevada chips).
• Obsolete chips (that’s what I’m trying to focus on)
• No Elks chips (personal and painful relationship w/organization…don’t ask, please)
• Would like to trade 2 of mine (1 each yellow and white) for 2 of yours, or yours don’t HAVE to be a matched set. Or one for one…I have about 20 sets, and 20 or so extra yellows.
• Send me a scan if you can so I don’t get dupes. I know, beggars can’t be choosers and all that.
• Does anyone have the RED chip of this set? Would love that one. See story below…
OK, the story…
I’m a relatively new chipper - trying to focus on Obs.Obs (Obsolete and Obscure) in the northwest and Nevada (since that’s what I started with). Still small-time. I had been tempted to dive into the illegal area for a variety of reasons, and dropped a toe in for a couple of Detroit chips (used to live there) and one from Boise (ditto). Still, wasn’t convinced that I wanted to do more.
The, early last month, as we drove back from a trip down the Oregon Coast, we stopped in an antique store that I knew had some old money and tokens, but had never seen chips before. There were a bunch of old paper/cardboard collections in racks, a few plastic chip collections in racks…nothing worth looking at, until… Voila! I saw a cardboard box with a collection of mis-matched chips. The row of blue chips were standard paper/cardboard stuff, but the other three rows were clay, and in great shape and had a hot stamp…but where were they from? I didn’t want to make the investment until I knew where they came from (and if it was any interest to me), so I made a note and came home, and jumped on the chipboard for ID help.
Help eventually came from Gene Trimble and John Johannes. John has the blue chips that obviously were part of this set, and Gene ID’d them for me (John also found the ID that he got from Bud Meyer, and has posted his chips here:
http://www.thechipboard.com/index.cgi/page/1/md/read/id/1084003/sbj/fs-john-harvey-s-tavern-boring-or-fs/
I gave Gene a description, but the pic from John was better than my 1,000 words (I promise I will never go antiquing again without my camera). Anyway, once I had the ID I wanted to buy the chips…but work and a rare coastal snowfall made travel impossible until yesterday.
And I scored! The chips were still there, and as I was paying the lady said, “Y’know, I think there’s another chip around here somewhere that goes with that,” and she found it AND the box cover (see pic). It’s no doubt an original box, and ironies of ironies, the side you can’t see says “RED” (the one color I haven’t found yet). So now I have beaucoup chips that a month ago I had no idea I wanted!
Still doing research on them - I have no idea why “D & W” and for how long Harvey’s Tavern used them. Still, it’s my first major antique “find” and I’m a happy camper.
Thanks to all who have helped in this process…now, enough talk, let’s trade!
PS - no, the $1.50 on the box is NOT what I paid (I wish)
