James would probably advise against tossing them in the dishwasher, too!

I have to admit, once I put a few in a small net bag and put 'em through the washing machine just to see... They came through with flying (clean!) colors. It was just a few old home-game hot-stamped chips. Another time I was carefully cleaning a hot-stamp chip that wasn't really that bad...wish I'd left it alone as I did some damage to the hot stamp . You just don't know how a chip will react to different methods, until you try.
