Larry, I know that you've already said that YOU will take them out, so I am not trying to re-convince you. Instead, for others that are not sure, I will add this...
The focal plain for a scanner is at the top of the glass. The further away an gets from that surface, the more out-of-focus the item will be. While not a big deal to know that a chip is round, but it is possible to lose some of the finer details of an inlay.
