We went on vacation last week...put about 2700 miles on the rental car (Just got a new car about 3 months ago, but didn't want to put the miles on it ). Don't have a lot of treasures or stories to share , but there's one or two things that might interest a couple of you...some chip-related, some not
(One thing I will NOT be sharing is any gambling stories...BRUTAL for me!!! )
One of the things that's fun about a road trip is the other vehicles you see on the road. It seems like most of them are on the opposite side of the highway, coming toward you. It's hard to take a picture under those conditions , but here's one that was going in our direction. I think it's a Packard? Needs a little work before it can qualify as a hot rod of the day , nonetheless it was a cool car
The first casino that we stopped at was the Lady Luck in Caruthersville, MO. Just a small riverboat...
Next day it was Fitzgerald's, in Tunica. My husband said they'd gotten new chips since we were there last, but we didn't bring any back or take any pictures.
Sheraton in Tunica became the Roadhouse. It was pretty quiet in there.
Headed down to Vicksburg and stayed at the Riverwalk. Wandered over to the Ameristar...
Caught a cool sunset...
Next day headed south toward New Orleans. We noticed several "casinos" at Louisiana Truck Stops. Finally stopped in one that was called the Royal Flush. Seemed to be all video poker games...with some weird quirks and twists...
Here's the sign from another one that we passed...I'd guess that we passed about 8-10 of 'em, or so...
Went down to the Gulf, it was beautiful ! However, there were some dark clumps and brown stains that were probably from the oil spill . We saw 3-4 clean up crews still working...
Did take a couple of pictures in Biloxi, while waiting for a traffic light...
Went to Boomtown for a little gambling...
Not exactly sure where Ponchatoula, LA is , but we stopped there and browsed through a few antique shops. We couldn't find anything that we collect (Nevada chips 'n stuff), but my hubby was drawn to a few New Orleans area illegal chips. He bought a couple of 'em... (don't know how much he paid, I was in a different part of the store.)
We got a story with the chips . The owner was John and he told us that about 7-8 years ago there was a casino collectibles show at the Imperial Palace in Biloxi. Just about two days before the show, his wife found several boxes of the Green Mill chips. They went to the show and he said they created a bit of a stir Imagine that! They sold some of the chips, but didn't release all of them, and they still have quite a few. He said that same weekend his wife stuck some money in a slot machine...she thought it was a quarter machine, then noticed it was only a nickel machine. She decided to play it anyway, and hit a huge jackpot...I don't remember how much, but it was several thousand dollars!
Anyway, he has five colors of the Green Mill chips, several colors of Terry's Place chips, and quite a few other chips. I took a few pictures...
If you have any interest in his chips, it's John Ernst, trailsend00@att.net (that's a zero-zero at the end...not oh-oh)
This was a sign I haven't seen in years...in a small-ish town on highway 61...
And a rainbow on the way home
