While I do not have that particular chip, I assume that "$5" is on the reverse, or possibly it is blank, but I suspect it shows "$5". When these chips were hot-stamped, I imagine the operator had buckets full of the blank chips and could care less which side of the chip was up. It was either the side that had the inserts appearring in the black/white, black/white, black/white pattern, or flipped over and appearring in the white/black, white/black, white/black pattern.

Statistically speaking, if the chips came out of the buckets in a random order, then about 50% of the finished product woud be black/white, black/white, black/white and the other half would be white/black, white/black, white/black.

There would have been an up-charge to have them all the same, or an awfully bored operator. vbg

I hope that explains the comment about "reversed edge inserts".
