reply, but it should still be useful.
The FAQ categorizes 4 kinds of finishes on Chipco chips, as Linen, Recessed, Satin, and Slick. Linen and Recessed are basically the same, except that the areas between the grid lines are raised in the linen versions and recessed in the recessed versions. When dragging a finger nail across the linen version it is like sand paper. When dragging a finger nail across a recessed version it feels fairly smooth, but a little bit rough.
Linen versions, after a lot of use, begin to feel like a recessed version, but under a magnifying glass, both versions can still be discerned after a lot of wear.
The satin finish is smooth to the touch of a finger nail, with a little bit of drag. However, that resistence (drag) is not uniform, as it is with the recessed versions.
As for the slick versions, I could be mistaken, but at the time that Greg Susong made that entry, it pertained to non-Chipco ceramic chips that are extremely flat and glossy smooth. However, that smoothness may be a function of the printing process. I do not know for certain, and off-hand, I cannot think of any Chipco chip that fits that description. But perhaps someone will prove me wrong, which will add to my education!
The TCR use of linen and smooth, has lumped both linen and recessed together, and satin as smooth.
I hope this helps.
