N is the longest range that you can get. You might want to check the manufacturer's website to see if there is a firmware upgrade (N is still not a published standard yet), but there are also better antennas that you can get as well. Take a look at this and you can see the range vs speed chart for a specific Netgear router.
But this depends a lot of the obstacles it has to go through/around, the construction of the house, etc. I was picking up signals from across the street pretty clearly in my neighborhood -- and unless your house is Buckingham Palace sized its probably a longer distance but its a clear shot from window to window.
You can get an inexpensive router like an Apple Airport ($99) and plug that in somewhere to act as a bridge. There are other ways to boost the signal as well.
