I think it was Chip Chat. Makes sense that finer particles in the clay would better conform to the mold. The mold does have to be polished as Gene says or finer clay won't make a difference.

Kind of similar to the making of proof coins and tokens; polish the protruding portion of the die and strike the coin several times to get the material into all the crevices of the die and you get mirrored fields.
