I know being "overinsured" pays off when it's needed.
I've had family members who retired from NYPD 40 years ago never thinking that the few extra pennies a month paid into the program would pan out down the road... Sure worked out fine for them; including housekeeping and shopping... was easy on their children and grandchildren as well.
We had a club member a few years back here in Florida who had posted the same advice; "be prepared by paying up front."
I'm planning on retiring at sea; either buying a cabin timeshare or booking several world cruises in advance (non-transferable; w/ restrictions, of course)... I've read a few contracts that seem to be very fair in price. I've been on cruises where one man in his 80s was on his 60th cruise with the line (had to disembark/embark, though)... just think of all the strange each week. I'd like to be dumped off the side as well when the time comes; nothing fancy, just wrapped in our colors.
Hope things work out fine for you... and it's good to see that you're still smiling...!

Oh, BTW, I plan on taking a few choice Mother-of Pearls with me on the trip down to the bottom (hope all the oil is gone by then )... nothing like retuning some close frieds to where they once belonged...
