The purpose of the external hard drive is to "back up" your files - so you keep them on your internal drive for easy, quick access but have them on the external drive so you can recover them in case of a crash of your primary drive. If however, your primary hard drive is low on free space you could delete them after moving them but you should have some other form of back up - like a dvd or cd.
